Why mindfulness?
I can’t exactly remember when was the first time I have came across the concept of mindfulness. I guess it has happened quite naturally as this topic is quite trendy now. It’s present in all social media and all big corporations implementing mindfulness related strategies in order to improve employees satisfaction. Similar scenario happened in my workplace. Our growing Health and Well-being Department started to introducing Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program to help healthcare professionals deal with stressful job and decrease stress-related sickness. This coincided with my final year of Nursing training. We have been asked to design a project of change for our final dissertation. As a ‘hippie soul’ I have decided to write about mindfulness as a strategy to overcome stress-related sickness and improve nurses mental well-being. While I have found the work on that dissertation very challenging, trying to not to loose mind while doing all my usual mum/housewife duties, working full-time as a nurse on top of the dissertation. I have become more and more intrigued by this concept. Read few books. And started to realise it actually can help me not only at work but also at home. I became very passionate about it.
I have been practising yoga for about 5 yrs now. It helped me to calm down and focus while doing physical exercises. I love the deep stretches a challenging poses but I have never went into the meditation that much, maybe only to the basic level. Mindfulness opened the world of deeper meditation, which I am really enjoying and trying to teach my children the mindful ways of living.
I am not an expert. I am still learning. I am not opening this blog to preach anyone! But I have decided to record our journey and experiences and see if they will change with the time. Also I want to build the links with other people who practice mindfulness, meditation and yoga to learn more. I simply want to become better at it and help my family to deal with every day struggle.
